Just like that there were eleven pouches!

For those of you who don't know, my daughter has switched schools (again)... she's now at a specialized school (still in our district). If you've been around a lot you'd know that Allie has battled with a lot of behavior related and hearing related school problems. Well, her new school is awesome! Allie has been at the new school for about three months now, and we've noticed a huge huge huge change in her behavior. It's so amazing. We're very grateful for to the staff - the teachers and aids, and everyone who helps make every day successful for Allie.

So - how could I give an end of the year "thanks" to just her home room teacher? I couldn't. I decided to make a simplified gift for each of the people who help Allie at school on a daily basis. Yes, that's eleven people (not counting the bus driver who will get some treats of another sort). Yes. ELEVEN. lol

Here's the end result of 3/4 yard of fabric, a dozen zippers, and a couple hours. Eleven laminate box pouches. Insane!

These are so much fun! I sewed them assembly line style - one step at a time. It really went fast and my only regret is that Hobby Lobby didn't carry actual Oilcloth. The laminate is for suckers.

  1. Im so glad she is having a better school experience. How awesome of you to recognize ALL of the people in her school day who touch her daily life. Says the elementary librarian.

  4. Good to hear that Allie has finally found the right place for her. Out of curiosity, why do you prefer the oilcloth over the laminate?

  5. A good and understanding school staff makes all the difference, doesn't it? My son has special needs, and some teachers were very tough to work with, actually had to report one to Protection and Advocacy because the principal wouldn't listen to my concerns. Amazing how fast things change when they call the school. Got absolutely EVERYTHING I had been asking the principle for that day. Desperate times......

  8. My daughter is in SpEd for multiple disabilities and I know how nice it is when a school and/or its staff work out!

I also had to make 11 teacher/aide/bus driver gifts this year - whew! I went for a cross-body bag for the main teacher and fabric, refillable notepad covers for the rest.

I have some of that exact floral fabric you used. I've wondering what to make with it. Now I know! :-) Plus, I want to try a boxy pouch for myself before I make one for my son who's off to college in August.

  9. So glad she is doing well! My little grand daughter is smart as a whip, so helpful and kind. She has ADHD and tourette's (sp?). I worry about her at school, kids can be so cruel. She luckily has had wonderful teachers that love her and I made them gifts a few months ago too. Best wishes to you all!

  10. All those people are going to really appreciate being remembered by you. Education is often a thankless job, and it is so nice that you're taking some time to say "thanks."

  11. Darn, darn, double darn…. I had a whole comment typed out… and I know it didn't go through this time… because there was a little sign out button which I accidentally clicked. *sigh*

Anyway, I'm sure Allie's teachers and specialty staff loved their pouches. I'm also glad that the new school is working out well for all of you! I don't think I've ever used oilcloth. I have noticed a big difference in laminate, even from quilt shops.
