Priscilla's Quilt - Quilt-In-A-Weekend style.

These fabrics are so hard to photograph! The green looks too lime here, but not lime enough below! Also, shadows... Chicago fall/winter is the worst for photos!

So life keeps moving forward. People are always having babies. This time I'm pretty ok with it. My cousin Jordan's girlfriend is pregnant - and due right after Christmas. The baby is a girl, and she will be named Priscilla. I got it into my head that I'd make her a quick little quilt.

I pulled the fabrics from my stash - based on the colors they have picked out for the nursery, green, teal, and orange. I think the colors are just great!

This is Priscilla's room - thanks to Facebook it's easy to keep in touch!

I went straight to my pinterest boards for some quick inspiration -- knowing I wanted to do the wonky cross block - very minimal but lots of fun color. I pieced the wonky cross section in about an hour or so - on my day off, while Allie was at school. It took one stop at the quilt shop for some lime green linen (they were out of Kona Grass green), then it was finished in no time! I love quick little quilts like this.

There are prayers and my signature tucked under the binding. Wrapped in love!

My dimensions were based on the package of crib quilt batting I had on hand. Finishing at about 40" x 40"

I sure hope Priscilla enjoys it - but first I'll need to mail it out to them. Sometimes it's hard living two states away!

I actually remembered to use one of my quilt labels! I used Wonder Under to fuse it onto the back and stitched around the sides.

Chicago MQG Calender Challenge

I love that Fabric.com tags their fabrics - it's so helpful for the solids!
My guild is putting together a calender full of quilts - and to fill up all those pretty spots we're having a challenge. Each person participating was assigned a season to inspire their quilt. At the end we'll have a judge to help us decide who get's the "main" picture for each month. We'll have them professionally photographed for the calender, which is pretty cool.

As it is I have two and a half weeks until the quilt is due! Way to leave it to the last minute! Luckily I've had the quilt planned for a couple months. I used the Threadbias.com design tool to draw it all out.

I finally got around to ordering the fabrics a couple weeks ago. My assigned season is Summer, and I'm shooting for a rainbow sherbet color scheme!

Today I had a few hours to test out a block, and cut all my fabrics. I usually don't make quilts like this - I typically cut as I go. My hope for this project is to offer the pattern for sale - so I figured it would be best to do all the cutting at once. (Man cutting takes time doesn't it?!)

My pattern is made up of various drunkard's path blocks. I didn't have a small size rotary cutter to work with my circle cutter acrylic ruler - so I made a template and did it the old fashioned way. I did cut four pieces at once though - to speed up the process a bit.

Chocolate is necessary for a big fabric cutting session!
I'm happy to say I had enough time to piece about a third of the blocks today too - they turned out so nicely!! I'm loving the colors!!!

Here's hoping I can get this one done in time!!

How do you choose fabrics?

Last night my friend Emily came over to hang out - and to help me pick out colors for my next quilt!

Konas! Chartreuse, Cactus, Canary, Melon, Coral, Ice Frappe, (and maybe School Bus).

I have to say that it was a really enlightening process! I knew the feeling I wanted the quilt to invoke, and the pattern (put together using the Threadbias design tool!) only uses a handful of fabrics. That made it pretty hard! Emily has an art degree, and an exceptional eye for color - which helped a lot!

The part that makes me nervous. There is a distinct difference between the old color card (the one I chopped up), and the updated color card.

I'm excited (and a little nervous) to say that I'll be using Kona Ice Frappe as my background color! I'm hoping this will give a nice crisp summer feeling - like rainbow sherbet.

Now I just have to wait for the fabrics to arrive! This quilt has to be finished by our July guild meeting ... so I have some work ahead of myself!!

So how do you choose fabrics for a new project?

Sew Thinky Thursday: Week 6

Are you ready for an easy Sew Thinky Thursday question this week?

What is your favorite color of Kona Cotton*? How much of it do you keep in your stash? Is there a solid that you always find yourself running out of?

Kona Curry
My favorite Kona is Curry. You're likely to find snippets of it sneaking into many of my sewing projects. I love the way it pops against my normal color palates (blues, pinks, greys). It's pretty amusing that my favorite Kona is a yellow, I don't think that I'd identify my fav color as being yellow in any other circumstance. If someone randomly walked up to me and asked my fav color I'd likely tell them blue - I'm much less picky about blues so there's that. Ironically I don't usually have Curry in my stash - I use every bit of it as soon as I buy it. :) If I had the money I would consider buying a bolt of it... but I actually think my using just a teeny bit is part of the novelty of it. That little pop is all a project needs!
Wouldn't these make a lovely little bundle? Some shop should market the "Emily" Kona bundle - Just saying.

Other favorite Kona colors of mine include Lagoon, Peacock, Lime, Grass green, coral, melon, pomegranite, cerise, berry, ash, coal, and charcoal.

You can find images of all the Kona colors on Robert Kaufman's site.

*Feel free to respond using your fav solid fabric type. I know some people swear by other brands, but to me Kona is still the standard. I know the quality to expect when I buy Kona, and I have a color card so ordering online is easy. This post is in no way sponsored by Kona... although I'd really adore if someone felt like making me an official Kona spokesperson (is there such a thing). LOL

Now it's your turn to share your fave Kona color! Blog about it, then come back here to link up your post! Be sure to check out the other posts linked up and leave them some comment love. Everyone loves comments.
